Koyamaki essential oil is a very rare essence, distilled almost exclusively in Japan. Sciadopitys verticillata is the only species of the genus Sciadopitys, a botanical relic dating back to the Cretaceous period.

It is a tree endemic to Japan, found naturally only in certain areas of Honshū, Shikoku and Kyūshū. In several prefectures (notably Nara and Wakayama), it is considered a sacred and protected tree, which severely limits forest harvesting. Only pruning waste, or small branches from maintenance, are used. It takes several dozen kilograms of fresh foliage to produce a few dozen millilitres of oil.
